St Georges Gynaecological Anatomy Course, September 2010

Since 2001 there have been 11 courses in Clinical Anatomy for Consultant Obstetricians & Gynaecologists held at the University of Bristol (www.bristolanatomycourse.co.uk). This year we will be holding the course at St Georges Hospital, London on Thursday & Friday, 16th and 17th September, 2010.

St Georges has a strong tradition in Clinical Anatomy with Henry Gray and Robert Lee among its best-known alumni. Gray wrote his textbook and died at the very young age of 32. Lee resigned the Regius Chair of Midwifery in Glasgow (without occupying it) to move to London where he discovered the cardiac and hypogastric plexi. Both lived in Wilton Place (just behind the Lanesborough site of the old hospital). Present day St Georges in Tooting, also has a strong tradition in clinical anatomy with undergraduates still being taught "proper" anatomy, and, a number of well-established postgraduate courses. The Course Organiser is Mr Paul Carter, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The Guest Lecturer is Miss Michelle Fynes, Consultant in Urogynaecology. Members of the Bristol faculty will assist with the teaching.

The programme includes clinical anatomy stations on both mornings - three topics per morning including "Myofascial Supports" "Pudendal Nerve and Perineum" "Arteries and Veins", etc, etc. Each are taken from a clinical standpoint e.g. arteries and veins includes brief reviews of control of haemorrhage at Caesarean section and hysterectomy accepting standard guidelines - and suggesting additional, effective manoeuvres. There will also be:

* seminar on contemporary techniques of incontinence and prolapse repair;
* clinical discussions of new views of endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids;
* radiological displays of pelvic anatomy using ultrasound and MR techniques
* demonstration of the autonomic nerves of the pelvis;
* specific reproductive medicine topics including "Ovulation" and "The Fallopian tube"
* sources of levator, uterosacral and neurological "defects" in childbirth

....... as well as the Gynecare Guest Lecture.

The first day starts at 0930 and will finish at 1800 - it is busy. The course dinner will be at Canizzarro House, Wimbledon, where discounted rates have been obtained for accommodation. There are many other local hotels. We will finish no later than 1600 on Friday to enable everyone to get away in good order. Participants are welcome to stay and do their own work should they so wish.

The course fee remains at £495. Applications are treated on "first come, first served" basis by sending an e-mail to anatomycourse@btinternet.com
